Here’s your listed of fully vetted destinations to warm up this winter. Great service + impressive food and beverage offerings in a tropical paradise = the perfect formula for leisuring. Shake off that holiday season madness. It’s always summer somewhere.
Read on for a list of my favorite practical resources for warm weather vacations. You’re welcome.
TULUM, MEXICO
In the past decade, Tulum, Mexico has developed into a near perfect vacation spot (we’re looking at you, freeway speed bumps). It’s easy to get to from the US. Its restaurant and bar scene are top notch – foodies, rejoice! Try drinks at Gitano, and have dinner at ARCA or Hartwood, two of the best restaurants in Tulum.
You will only find boutique hotels on this small strip of beach paradise, keeping it small-town vibes even during the busiest of seasons. Stay at Casa Malca, away from the bustle with a hidden grotto under the pool or BeTulum, with a sprawling beachfront dining experience, on the sand, live music, grilled lobster freshly delivered at the beach out front.
PHUKET, THAILAND
Phuket, Thailand is one of the most beautiful places on earth. The smiles, hospitality, the food, not to mention the view. That warm summer sea breeze year round. If you are looking for a warm weather destination for winter travel, Phuket is always a good choice. It’s a bit of a trek, but you won’t regret it.
There are so many great places to stay in Phuket, but the two best hotels (and hotel pools, obviously) are on a tiny stretch of beach north of Surin Beach. It’s called Pansea Surin Beach, and there you will find The Surin Phuket and Amanpuri. Both of these Phuket hotels have it all: superb service, impressive food and cocktails, and amazing rooms, all on a tiny strip of beach that feels like your own private tropical paradise.
If you choose to venture out of the hotel, you could go island hopping, peruse the market in Phuket town, or go find yourself a massage – on the daily! Relaxation is your goal here, and it will be had.
MAUI, HAWAII
Maui, Hawaii has been and always will be a go-to for warm weather vacations, and there is something for everyone there. Outdoor activities like surfing or hiking abound, if that is your thing. Take a helicopter flight and see the whole island. Go whale watching. Or, if you’re like me, you like to sample the breadth of the lunch menu poolside, while you think (or don’t) about all the things you aren’t doing.
A cool place to stay is the Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort. The cocktails are fresh, the food is a blend of Hawaiian and Japanese, which is quite delightful. And surprise food lovers – there is a Morimoto on site! Some of the best sushi and Japanese wagyu are waiting shortly down the path from your modern digs. Bonus – whale watching is popular in Maui in winter, so keep an eye on the water. You might just spot a humpback whale from the pool like I did.
